Body’s largest organ, the skin, gets its own exhibition

June 28, 2010

The skin is the body’s largest organ, but a new exhibition in London reveals how it is often the most overlooked organ, which people seem to take for granted.

The exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, London has put the human skin under the spotlight highlighting what a crucial part of the body it is.

The human skin prevents infections, retains fluid and other parts of the anatomy, it keeps us cool by allowing us to perspire, and generally act as a barrier to protect us.

So isn’t it time we celebrated what a fantastic organ it really is and gave it some TLC?

The exhibition aims to increase visitors’ understanding of the skin and covers various topics, such as society’s obsession with eternal youth, make up, tattoos, right through to revealing why the skin is so difficult to repair and heal following traumas such as burns.

Facial skin is particularly important, as it will forever be the part of the body that people see first. Looking after and maintaining your skin’s condition is vital to achieving optimum skin health, and it just so happens that good skincare equals youthful looks.

Changing your lifestyle can be the first steps to achieving good skin health – stopping smoking, cutting down on alcohol, eating healthily and exercising are all ways in which you can maintain your skin. Skin peels, using quality moisturisers and non-surgical cosmetic treatments can also re-inject some life into the skin and re-train it to produce the collagen and elasticity that is lost with age.

Long term fitness key to anti-ageing

January 5, 2010

Tuesday 5th January 2010

Scientists at Saarland University have found that people who engage in long-term physical exercise throughout their lives are to appear more youthful in their later years.

We would agree entirely that regular fitness and exercise definitely has an anti-ageing effect. In fact when you have non-surgical anti-ageing treatments, such as IPL or microdermabrasion, you can give them a boost by engaging in gentle physical exercise, which significantly enhances the whole skin rejuvenation process.

The scientists’ study focused on the protective caps on our chromosomes called telomeres, which help keep our DNA stable. These shorten with age causing our cells to diminish and thus have an effect on the youthfulness of the skin. They found that the telomeres in people who enjoyed regular exercise shortened far less quickly than those who were inactive, and because they shortened less quickly, the people aged less quickly.

So if you want to make the most of your anti-ageing efforts, we would recommend a good fitness regime, coupled by regular skin enhancing treatments, such as SkinGym for those who want to wind back the clock quickly and SkinSpa for busy people whose skin needs a boost.

Airbrushed Twiggy sparks complaints on anti-ageing treatments

December 16, 2009

Wednesday 16th December 2009

700 people have complained about an advert for anti-ageing cream that portrayed Twiggy as a wrinkle-free sixty-something, before Proctor and Gamble held its hands up and admitted to a spot of airbrushing.

We’ve blogged a lot about misleading adverts recently, commenting on how lying adverts ‘con’ consumers and distort their perceptions of beauty.

Twiggy is a beautiful woman (and doesn’t need any airbrushing), however there’s no-doubt that she battles with the bathroom mirror every morning wondering how she can diminish her fine lines and wrinkles – just like many other women her age!

If you’re worried about wasting your money on useless creams (which have to be advertsied with enhanced images to be successful) but can’t quite afford a surgical facelift, why not think about a non-surgical facelift? Our expert from SkinGenesis, Peter Beard explains what one is here.

If that doesn’t attract you however, you could think about IPL, microdermabrasion or skin peels – which all have an amazing rejuvenating effect when provided as part of a programme of skin treatments. SkinGym is a firm favourite with our clients, which takes 40 days, or try SkinSpa if you want a quick refreshing face fix!

It’s party season! Better have a skin treatment!

December 3, 2009

Thursday 3rd December 2009

Christmas is drawing nearer and the party season is upon us! As women across the UK dig to back of their wardrobes to see which sparkly number they can revive and customise with new glitzy accessories and shoes, many people don’t stop to think about getting their skin shape – which let’s face it, is the first thing people will look at before your outfit.

With the harsh winter weather, it’s easy to let your facial skin become dry and chapped, and its not until the night before a big party that you realise you should have taken action to give yourself a glow!

But fear not. At this early stage of December, you still have time to buff and polish the skin to perfection with the SkinSpa menu.

SkinSpa provides single-session treatments from which you can pick and choose skin treatments that will cleanse, rejuvenate and tone the skin, leaving you looking radiant.

No need to start treatments weeks in advance. SkinSpa has been designed to provide one-off visit treatments in the clinic for convenience, whilst gaining all the benefits of our traditional skin treatment programmes.

Protect your skin from the cold wind

November 23, 2009

Monday 23rd November 2009

The winds have been raging all over the UK this weekend and prolonged exposure to this ice-cold element can leave the skin feeling chapped and raw.

Throw in a bit of central heating too and your skin won’t know whether it’s coming or going and will simply go into overdrive! You might find you end up with dry, flaky skin, or maybe you’ll have a acne breakout… either way it won’t be very pleasant, that’s for sure.

So what can you do to protect your skin from the harsh winter weather?

  • Firstly, you NEED to invest in a good quality moisturiser, a non-comedogenic one, which means it doesn’t block the pores. We’d recommend using products from the Dermalogica skin care range, so you can be sure that your skin will always be protected and in tip top condition.
  • Remove all traces of make-up before you go to bed, no matter how tired you are. By doing so, you can ensure that your pores are free of any bacteria.
  • Hydrate! Starting by drinking lots of water. Aiming for 6-8 glasses of water every day will help to ensure that your skin retains its ‘plumpness’ and doesn’t get too dry. The occasional cup of tea can also be very good for you as it has excellent anti-oxidant properties.
  • See whether there are any professional skin treatments that can help revive the skin. Chemical skin peels are perfect for the party season and microdermabrasion works by effectively removing the dead cells that sit on the surface of the skin. Both are greatanti-ageing treatments and a good acne treatment. The SkinGenesis SkinSpa menu offers convenient single-session treatments that work and is designed to refresh the skin.
