Sunbed ‘addicts’ increase ageing and cancer risk

April 21, 2010

Around one third of sunbed users are addicted to their artificial tanning effects, researchers in New York have found, and SkinGenesis predicts that the number of ‘addicts’ is set to rise as people seek out the perfect tan.

Gillian MacPherson, Top Model UK Winner and SkinGenesis client

Researchers at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center found that those who became addicted to sunbeds were also more at risk of suffering from anxiety and over-indulging in alcohol and drugs. By tackling these underlying problems and addictions it would be possible to educate and encourage people to quit using them, cut their skin cancer risk and enjoy the natural sun safely.

As Summer draws nearer we at SkinGenesis can only foresee more and more people trying to get that tan top-up ahead of the summer holidays, however we are urging people not to use sunbeds or over-expose themselves to hardful UVA and UVB rays from the sun. Use fake tan or enjoy being an English Rose!

Gillian MacPherson, 49 and a classic model from Surrey is currently undergoing some corrective anti ageing treatments at SkinGenesis in Chester. She said: “I grew up in South Africa and in those days we really did not know the damage that the sun can do to skin so we used to stay out in the sun without any protection and as teenagers we even used to tan with cooking oil! Unfortunately that damage is showing itself now, years later.  Obviously now I never go in the sun without protecting my skin with a high factor sunscreen, hat, sunglasses!”

People are generally well-educated about the harmful effects of the sun today and sun protection advice has never been more straightforward and easy to follow.

  • Use sun protection factor 30+ when out in the sun, and reapply regularly throughout the day
  • Protect the delicate skin on the face and neck by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Stay out of direct sunlight between the hours of 11am and 3pm, as this is when you are most at risk of burning
  • Do not use sunbeds. At all.

For more sun protection advice, or to take advantage of a free expert skin analysis in Leeds, Manchester or Chester, visit the skin specialists at SkinGenesis, who will analyse the sun damage already done and advise on how to restore the skin’s youthfulness through the best anti-ageing treatments.

Perfect skin: Jessica Simpson goes make-up free for Marie Claire

April 13, 2010

Jessica Simpson has dared to do what no other woman on earth would dream of doing, for millions of Marie Claire readers to see: she’s posed make-up free on the front cover.

As the media force-feeds us images of ‘perfect’ women on a daily basis, how refreshing that a woman as famous as Jessica Simpson has had the guts to pose makeup-less for the front cover of one of the most popular lifestyle magazines in the US.

No make-up, no retouching, no regrets!’, was the strapline of the cover story, which was printed on the back of her one-off TV show that follows her on a journey through society’s obsession with image. Jessica’s is also a face that is commonly associated with a US acne treatment, and has spoken openly about her own battle with the skin condition. Now she’s showing off her clear skin for millions to see!

We always tell our clients that there is no such thing as ‘perfection’, but it’s about reaching a level of personal perfection and being comfortable in your own skin. Once you have achieved that, the sky is your limit.

With great skin comes great confidence and we bet that many of our clients would happily pose for Marie Claire’s front cover minus airbrushing. SkinGenesis skin treatments are designed to rejuvenate, rebalance and tone the skin and provide you with a look and complexion that would look great on the cover of a fashion magazine.

We acknowledge the fact that everyone has little niggles about their appearance and things that they would love to change about themselves, but we believe in accepting our own uniqueness and learning how to control any skin problems, which then allows you to accept them. Jessica admits that she would love to be taller, but accepts a little bump on her nose, which she says is an imperfection to everyone else, yet it’s her perfection to herself.

SkinGenesis becomes a YOUNGBLOOD mineral cosmetics stockist

February 17, 2010

Wednesday 17th February 2010

Here at SkinGenesis we’ve launched a new trend-setting cosmetics range called YOUNGBLOOD Mineral Cosmetics.

After taking the USA by storm, YOUNGBLOOD Mineral Cosmetics already enjoy a wide celebrity following and British beauty Cheryl Cole is just one the brand’s latest fans.

Skin care conscious fashionistas in Leeds, Manchester and Chester can now take advantage of the benefits of this young, vibrant mineral cosmetics range being stocked at SkinGenesis.

Clinically tested and developed alongside leading doctors, YOUNGBLOOD uses pure, natural minerals with no preservatives, petroleum dyes, zinc oxide, fragrances or talc. The range acts as both a skin treatment and an effective skin coverage and is suitable for all skin types, ages and ethnicities.

Peter Beard, our director of treatments, said: “Many of our clients come in for skin treatments and like to apply make up before leaving the clinic, so we’re really excited about being able to offer a cosmetics range that not only covers the skin beautifully, but is also good for it.

“The properties of YOUNGBLOOD mineral cosmetics perfectly compliment the skin treatments we offer. This means our clients can benefit from the purest form of cosmetics that cover beautifully without being detrimental to the underlying skin, which is a common problem with other make up brands. The protective and soothing qualities of YOUNGBLOOD make it ideal for our clinic.”

YOUNGBLOOD’s short list of ingredients signifies the simplicity of the brand, distinguishing it from other ‘mineral’ ranges. YOUNGBLOOD is a blend of 100% pure minerals that not only sooth the skin, but also offer adjustable, non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic coverage with a perfectly flawless, sun protecting finish.

Clean and lightweight, YOUNGBLOOD allows your skin to breathe and wont block pores or cause irritation, making it suitable for all skin conditions: sensitive, oily to normal to dry, rosacea and acne, hyperpigmentation and sun damaged, broken capillaries and even allergy sensitive skin.

The range’s multipurpose benefits also make it water-resistant and transfer-proof, meaning your make-up will last all day without touch-ups and in loose, pressed and liquid formulations there is an endless choice of shades and coverage for all skin tones.

Top model Naomi’s acne treatment mission

February 12, 2010

Friday 12th February 2010

Ready for the catwalk

Model Naomi Heap is preparing for what could be her big break in the fashion industry, Top Model UK

With her long dark hair, distinct features and a dream to hit the catwalks, there was just one thing that stood in her way – acne – and the need for an effective acne treatment.

After sailing through her audition on the premise that she ‘sorted out her skin’, Naomi made it her mission to sort out her stubborn spots and blemishes once and for all, before the final of this prestigious national competition.

Naomi said: “As you can imagine, in such a competitive industry, it’s vital that you have great skin. After searching on the internet for an affordable skin specialist, I approached SkinGenesis as they offered exactly what I was looking for – effective adult acne treatments. The medication I was on helped, but it didn’t achieve half as much as I wanted it to, and progress was slow, so I booked in for a consultation with Deborah, the clinic manager in Chester.

“She put together a bespoke skin treatment package that would treat both my remaining active acne, as well as the existing scars caused from previous blemishes. We started off with an Expert Skin Analysis, which determined my skin type, moisture content, sun damage and pH, which have helped me choose the right products for my skin. I have since undergone several courses of Microdermabrasion to get rid of all the dead skin cells and avoid further breakouts, as well as one IPL treatment.

“I have also received a gentle vitamin C skin peel, which has benefitted my skin dramatically. I was a bit of a tan-fan in my younger years and used the sunbeds quite a lot!

“All in all I am very happy with the progress we’ve made. By the time the competition comes around, I’m very confident that my skin will be as perfect as it possibly could be.”

Hair extensions – the type of hair removal you DON’T want!

February 9, 2010

Tuesday 9th February 2010

People who wear salon applied hair extensions are risking destroying their own hair permanently, says the Trichological Society – who would like a ban on all glued or woven hair extensions.

Many salons across the country now offer a hair extensions service, promising you longer, thicker, luscious locks to make you look like you’ve just stepped off the red carpet.

You might expect to feel like a million dollars once leaving the salon, but what they fail to tell you is that poor quality hair can snag and tangle with brushing, which in turn pulls out your own hair, leaving it permanently damaged. Wear them for prolonged periods of time and the effects can be far worse, leading to baldness and hair loss.

A complete ban might not be the ideal solution – after all, we all like to look and feel good every now and then. Close monitoring and taking regular breaks should ensure that your hair and scalp remain healthy.

Either way, we think we’ll be sticking with the permanent hair removal that is safe – IPL, which is suitable for the legs, bikini, facial hair, underarms, back and chest.

Celebrity anti-ageing secrets!

January 21, 2010

Thursday 21st January 2010

With celebrities being constantly in the public eye, it’s imperative that they look good. Every other week we see articles about how good someone famous looks for their age, what is their secret?

Many would say Botox or cosmetic surgery, however there are many celebrities who swear they have never gone near any sharp implements.

British beauty and TV chef Nigella Lawson showed what good home-cooked food can do for the skin after looking enviably youthful on her 50th birthday.

And it’s not just the ladies who stay forever young. Johnny Depp doesn’t look a day over 30 with his flawless skin and chiselled looks.

Here’s the secret: non-surgical cosmetic treatments. That’s right, you need not pay the earth for going under the knife, only for your face to sag and wrinkle again within a few years. Instead you spread out the cost over the years and maintain your skin by having regular upkeep skin treatments.

IPL, skin peels and microdermabrasion are the favourites – and the most effective… according to our clients anyway, and we’d definitely agree!

Scientists crack the code for a ‘perfect face’

December 21, 2009

Monday 21st December 2009

Scientists at the University of Toronto believe they may have worked out the dimensions for the ‘perfect face’.

Yes, apparently the most attractive female face depends on the measurements between the eyes, ears and mouth, with singer Shania Twain coming out tops in celeb-land.

The vertical distance between the eyes and mouth should be 36% of the overall length of her face, from hairline to chin. The horizontal distance between a woman’s pupils should then be 46% of the width of her face from ear to ear.

So we have a question… what if we don’t measure up? Are these scientists saying that we are not beautiful?! If so, we beg differ. Many of our clients come into our clinic seeking the perfect complexion, and long to achieve perfection. But we are strong believers in the fact that everyone is attractive in their own right, and by offering expert skin and body treatments, we can help people achieve their idea of perfection with natural, pain-free cosmetic treatments.

We say, take no notice of the University of Toronto! If we all looked the same, that would be incredibly boring and what one person finds attractive, someone else might not.

Book in for a free expert skin analysis now at SkinGenesis and see how you can maximise on your beauty.
