Long term fitness key to anti-ageing

Scientists at Saarland University have found that people who engage in long-term physical exercise throughout their lives are to appear more youthful in their later years.

We would agree entirely that regular fitness and exercise definitely has an anti-ageing effect. The scientists’ study focused on the protective caps on our chromosomes called telomeres, which help keep our DNA stable. These shorten with age causing our cells to diminish and thus have an effect on the youthfulness of the skin. They found that the telomeres in people who enjoyed regular exercise shortened far less quickly than those who were inactive, and because they shortened less quickly, the people aged less quickly.
