Acne Treatment: Natural or medicine?

February 26, 2009

Thursday 26th February 2009

Tragic stories about a boy in Wales have hit the news recently, who died after suffering an allergic reaction to some pills that had been prescribed by his doctor to treat acne. This may put people off taking antibiotics as the best acne treatment, therefore it’s worth highlighting the natural alternatives available.

Cases like this are extremely rare, so there is no reason to cause public outcry. However modern acne treatment like intense pulsed light therapy (IPL), microdermabrasion, skin peels and even mesotherapy – they are all acne treatments that stimulate natural responses in the skin, making getting rid of your spots, blemishes and acne scars safer and can put your mind at rest.

There are virtually no risks involved with any of the above and you can read about all four acne treatments in depth.

IPL: light energy is absorbed by the skin naturally and the skin is stimulated to increase the rate at which new skin is produced

Microdermabrasion: is a mechanical exfoliation of the outer dead layer of skin and can be very enjoyable and therapeutic!

Skin Peels: involves applying layers of chemicals on the area to be treated and allowing the chemicals to react, so dead skin cells are removed from the surface – these are not as painful as people make out, discomfort during our skin peels usually lasts for a few minutes, if any at all.

Mesotherapy: a natural medicine technique that stimulates the middle layer of the skin – usually used only on severe cases of acne.

Too much Wii = need for skin analysis?

February 24, 2009

Tuesday 24th February 2009

How many hours do you spend playing on the PlayStation or Nintendo Wii? Half and hour? A couple of hours per day? Maybe more. If you do, you better watch out that you don’t develop ‘Wii-itus’ or ‘PlayStation palmar hidradenitis’…

Yes apparently The British Association of Dermatologists have found a link between a new skin disorder and playing on a games console for too long, too often. Too much play can cause sores to develop on the palms of your hands, usually found on the soles of children’s feet who engage in too much joggin or running.

It is thought to be caused by sweating during physical activity – the tight grip around the plastic handset, the sweat caused by the excitement and adrenaline of the game etc.

Don’t worry though, if you have developed these sores, a week to two weeks spent off the PlayStation and doing something outdoors to get air to your hands should do the trick.

Now we don’t have any expertise on games console-related skin disorders, but if you’ve noticed anything weird on your skin lately and would like to get it checked out, you can get a skin analysis at SkinGenesis.

Do Geordies really have a thicker skin?

February 19, 2009

Thursday 19th February 2009

What is it about the North East? If you’ve ever been out in Newcastle, you will probably have noticed that nearly everyone wasn’t wearing a coat, even if the temperature outside was freeeeeezing! But is this really because Geordies actually, literally have a thicker skin than their Southern counterparts, or simply just a cultural thing?

I love the North East having spent my uni years there and starting my career there, and I have to say, in the four years that I lived up North, I probably didn’t wear a coat on a night out once – especially when i was a student. Which makes me think it’s a cultural thing.

A project consisting of an online questionnaire will survey Geordies to find out whether they are naturally warmer out in the cold. It is part of Newcastle’s ScienceFest, which lasts for 10-days, and will investigate whether there is a genetic link to the Toon’s hardiness or whether it’s simply just a matter of showing off your new togs and not having to worry about finding a cloakroom!

Again, I personally think it’s a culture thing. No one else takes a coat, so you brave the weather and forget about shivering! Either that or it’s just so cold up there that your body goes numb and you’re unable to feel how freezing you are! (Actually this is probably more correct!)

All I know is that when i go out anywhere else, i can’t bear the cold and I at least wear a jacket – as my mum used to tell me every Saturday night, ‘you’ll catch your death of cold wearing that’!

Of course, if you’re like the geordie dancer there’s no probelm keeping warm!

Cellulite treatment doesn’t cost the earth

February 18, 2009

Wednesday 18th February 2009

I was chatting to my cousin the other day and she was talking about how her cellulite is getting her down and how she’s planning the grand mission to bust that cellulite before even a spark of summer arrives.

Except she didn’t really have a clue where to start! There are so many methods out there to try and get rid of cellulite, and i’m sure plenty of women will agree that it’s not the easiest thing to shift. But there are treatments and exercises out there that will work, you just have to persevere.

In fact, the cellulite treatment by Eporex, a type of mesotherapy, has been voted as ‘the best’ by Elle Magazine, Real Magazine and even the Daily Telegraph.

To give you a bit of background, cellulite is a collection of fat cells resulting from poor lymphatic drainage, fluid retention, poor circulation, not drinking enough water, a sedentary lifestyle and your good old hormones.  Like any type of fat deposit, cellulite forming fat is six times more likely to be stored on the lower body and is six times harder to shift than upper body fat.  A contributory factor is the poor circulation that most women have around the buttocks and thighs… but enough of the science…

Eporex can help by targeting the problem at the root and introduces concentrated amounts of more than a dozen natural vitamins, minerals and amino acids  into the subcutaneous fat layer (sorry, last bit of science i promise!) where cellulite exists. This significantly reduces the orange peel effect, tones and tightens the skin and removes unsightly dimples.

Ask your therapist about it and see what they think. We’re so confident about Eporex that in our clinic, we have a ‘satisfaction guaranteed’ policy, so surely this natural treatment has got to be worth a try?

Our hearts go out to Jade Goody

February 16, 2009

Monday 16th February 2009

Our hearts and sympathies go out to Jade Goody at this traumatic time for her. Jade was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year and despite desperate attempts to put a halt on the cancer, it has spread with a vengeance and has now been told she has only months to live.

Jade had us all glued to our screens back in 2002 on Big Brother 3 and has since become a celebrity in her own right and has enjoyed many business ventures providing a sound future for her two children. It’s an outright shame that Jade has received this terrible news and we just hope she enjoys every last minute with her children and husband to be, Jack Tweed.

Jack proposed after Jade found out she has terminal cancer and she sprung to making arrangements to make her big day as special as any girl dreams of. We think Jade is being extremely brave at this time and is set to marry this week.

It’s Friday 13th! Any nightmares?!

February 13, 2009

Friday 13th February 2009

Arrrrgh! It’s Friday 13th and i’m sure i’m not the only one who is dreading something going wrong today! I have to say, so far so good, however i don’t want to speak too soon.

I’m quite a superstitious person… I don’t walk under ladders, walk over three drains, I salute a magpie when i see it on its own… etc etc… so i am being especially careful today! Tonight is the celebration of my friend’s birthday, so I was half expecting to have woken up to huge rash on my face or hair like a bird’s nest! But so far, and others might disagree (!), I am looking pretty normal!

Anyway, we want to know about your Friday 13th experiences… let us know what’s happened to you today – good and bad!

I can’t get no sleep!

February 12, 2009

Thursday 12th February 2009

Health gurus and admittedly, us – we’re always banging on about the risks of smoking, drinking and eating too much, however lack of sleep has recently been identified as equally hazardous, which is essential for good mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.

Everyone has their own prefered sleep patterns. I for example like around 6 hours sleep per night, which helps me to get up on time and start the day on a positive note. Any more or any less than that and I want to sleep in all day!

Getting enough sleep therefore appears to be part and parcel of the much publicised ‘healthy lifestyle’. As we live in a time where people work hard and party harder, it’s no wonder people aren’t getting enough sleep. Our skin is our body’s main organ and a lack of sleep can have drastic, tiring effects on the skin. You know what i’m talking about, those mornings when you’ve had the best sleep ever… you actually feel like sleeping beauty and this shows in your skin. Glowing and radiant!

The BBC pointed out that inadequate levels of sleep can lead to further diseases in the long term and it’s getting to the point where we live as a ‘tired society’, relying on coffee and caffeine kicks to wake us up!

Jennifer Aniston turns 40 and looks fab! No need for anti aging treatment?

February 11, 2009

Wednesday 11th February 2009

Can you believe Jennifer Aniston has turned 40?! She doesn’t look a day over 30! Now we know from reading the celeb mags that Jen is an avid fan of exercise and healthy eating and she is the perfect advert for why it is so important to keep your body in tip top shape!

Sure Jen might have had only best facial treatments and personal trainers available, however you can try all the anti-aging treatments in the world, but if you don’t make a conscious effort to take care of yourself, the effects – if any – will not be very long lasting. You will always get a better result from any cosmetic treatment if you follow a healthy balanced eating plan and engage in regular exercise.

Don’t worry, we’re not saying that you need to join a £60-a-month gym to burn those calories or start shopping up and down M&S’s organic aisles – all we mean is that once you start an anti-aging regime, a daily powerwalk to work or with the dog, coupled with your 5 portions of fruit and veg and plenty of water, should see you well on your way to looking fabulous at 40, and even 50!

And with so many effective anti-aging treatments on the market, it’s difficult to choose which one is right for you. It usually depends how quickly you want to look younger! A surgical face-lift for example will instantly lift and tighten your skin, revealing a brighter you. However there is recovery time involved and you run the risks that come with any cosmetic surgery, and if this worries you, it might be worth thinking about non-surgical alternatives.

Besides the well-known Botox and dermal fillers, SkinGym™, for example is an anti aging treatment that can rejuvenate the skin in 40 days. Microdermabrasion, mesotherapy and peels also provide expert anti-aging effects. Not only do you end up looking years younger, you can achieve results gradually… so people might not notice and you don’t have to give away your secret!

Chemical skin peel revive the skin!

February 10, 2009

Tuesday 10th February 2009

After bearing the harsh weather of the last couple weeks, it’s not surprising that an increasing number of our clients have approached us for a chemical peel to revive their tired, dry and chapped skin.

The cold, snow, rain and wind can have devastating effects on people’s skin, particularly those with sensitive skin and an chemical skin peel can go a long way to rectifying any damage that has been caused by mother nature.

Many people who come to our clinics tell us they don’t know how they lived without skin peels. Not only do they make you feel refreshed and vibrant, a peel will remove all the dead skin on the surface, get rid of all the accumulated dirt from the environment and unblock those pores. Your skin can finally start to breathe again, preventing unwanted acne breakouts and protecting against the skin cracking and becoming sore.

The best thing about our skin peels is that you will not be left looking like Samantha from Sex and the City and can resume with your normal day to day activities immediately after. People can experience a bit of redness to the skin, but it’s nothing drastic, nor anything to worry about.

If you have any queries about skin peels and the different types available, drop us a line below, give us a call or visit our

Laughter therapy reduces stress – go on have a giggle!

February 6, 2009

Friday 6th February 2009

We couldn’t stop laughing when we saw this clip on the BBC website. Next time you’re stressed at work, have a little giggle to yourself and apparently you are bound to feel better!

This new kind of laughter therapy has taken off in Kent. Whether you’re feeling upset, ill, stressed… laughter is the best medicine when taking all your worries away. I know that when I get together with the girls, you can guarantee we’ll be laughing about something and I always feel better!

What i don’t understand though is how people can just go to ‘laughing class’ and simply start laughing at nothing?! I often find that me and friends end up laughing at something that isn’t really that funny, which then makes it funnier, but there’s always a trigger to get us giggling. And I know that if i started laughing at my desk for no apparent reason, i’d look a bit mental and i would get a few strange looks from my fellow colleagues!

But i’m not judging, laughter therapy could be the new cure to people’s troubles, and in the current climate, why not give it a try? Get your mates over, dig out a funny film or a box set of Friends, reminisce about the good old days and have a giggly night in. Not only will you save money, you will also have a real laugh with your friends – just make sure your sides don’t split!
