Genes that make you go bald…

Monday 13th October 2008

We were very intrigued by a story we read this morning on the BBC website about how scientists have discovered new genes that can increase the risk of baldness by seven times.

“Analysis of DNA from 5,000 volunteers with and without male-pattern baldness found two stretches of the genome linked with the condition. One in seven men have both genetic variants, Nature Genetics reported.” (BBC report as above)

This could cause a dramatic advancement in this field by being able to detect the onset of male-pattern baldness early on. It means that pharmaceutical companies may start about developing creams, pills and gels that would help prevent hairloss from the outset, however as you will read, more research is needed.

But at least there’s a glimmer hope for the one in seven men who have the said genetic variants…
